2007/05/09 - Windows XP - Speed up shutdown time

Windows XP is somewhat slow at start-up? Eliminate programs that run at start-up.

Windows XP is slow at shutdown?

You can make it shutdown faster by preventing it from clearing your paging file at shutdown. For security reasons, Windows XP clears the paging file (pagefile.sys) of its contents on shutdown, which slows the process.

If high security isn't a priority, you may:

1. Run the Registry Editor (Start => Run, type regedit in the Run box).
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management.
3. Change the value of the ClearPageFileAtShutdown to 0.
4. Close the Registry.
5. Restart your computer.

From now on, whenever you turn off Windows XP, the paging file won't be cleared, thus reducing shutdown time.

Note: Editing the Registry should be done with caution (at your own risk).
